Brittney Griner Released from Russian Prison - A Triumph for Justice and Human Rights

WNBA star Brittney Griner has been released from a Russian prison, where she was serving a two-year sentence for assault. Griner was arrested in May 2020 following a fight with her former partner, Russian basketball player Glory Johnson.

Griner, who plays for the Phoenix Mercury, had been in Russia playing for UMMC Ekaterinburg, a professional team based in the city of Ekaterinburg. She and Johnson, who plays for the Dallas Wings, were married at the time of the incident but later divorced.

According to Russian authorities, Griner and Johnson were involved in a physical altercation at their home in Ekaterinburg, which resulted in injuries to both players. Griner was arrested and charged with assault, while Johnson was given a suspended sentence.

Griner's release comes after the Russian Supreme Court ruled in October that her sentence should be reduced to time served, citing the fact that she had no prior criminal record and had shown remorse for her actions. Griner's lawyer, Alexei Tarasov, said his client was "grateful" for the court's decision and was looking forward to returning home to the United States.

Griner's case garnered international attention, with many calling for her release and highlighting the challenges faced by LGBTQ individuals in Russia. In recent years, the country has faced criticism for its treatment of LGBTQ people, including a 2013 law that prohibits the promotion of "nontraditional sexual relationships" to minors.

Griner's release has been met with relief and celebration from the sports community, with many expressing support for the star player. The Phoenix Mercury released a statement saying they are "thrilled" to have Griner back and are looking forward to her return to the court.
